Part 2: My Book Depository Experience (+ 2022 Update)

2022 Update
It’s been more than 4 years since I wrote this and well, Idk if it’s a good or bad thing because the TL;DR from 2018 still applies now 😅 So yeah, for those ordering from Book Depository from Malaysia, please refer to the TL;DR below (main points have been bolded so y’all don’t have to read my rambles) if your order from them has been delayed.
**If the answers to your questions aren’t found in this post of mine, please directly contact Book Depository. I don’t work for them so my knowledge is limited to my own experience which I’ve detailed in this post 🙏🏻

Hello everyone! ~ヾ(^∇^)

In my previous post on my Book Depository Experience, I’ve noted some pros and cons as a customer residing in Malaysia. Among them being:

Pros

  • Free International Shipping
  • Huge catalog of books which practically guarantees that they’ll have whatever you want/need

Cons

  • There’s no tracking number to track your order once it’s shipped.(I recommend that if you must buy from Book Depository, to buy whatever you need/want several weeks in advance.
  • Some of the books may be more expensive than local bookstores.

(The above points aside, I also mentioned that the books come without bubble wrap, packaging nuts or any form of plastic wrapping. This can be seen as both a pro and con. A pro because the earth’s already polluted enough, a con because there’s nothing but vulnerable cardboard to protect them from mishandling and weather conditions.)

However, these pros and cons are only based on my first experience with Book Depository. It was a pleasant (or as pleasant as one being constantly anxious over not being able to track their order can be) experience and I only had to wait two weeks for my order to come. This time, unfortunately, was a mess.

Skip to TL;DR if you’d like the concise version!

Long explanations, details, whatever incoming! Skip to TL;DR if you don’t want to read my rambling 😂

I ordered two books on the 30th of May (Thursday) and they were dispatched on the 1st of June (Friday). Since Sunday is a non-working day for Royal Mail, my order probably got sent off to a plane on the same day and probably arrived Malaysia the next day, which is a Sunday (3rd June) and a non-working day. Then, assuming that customs has to go through a lot of packages and such, I gave them three working days and two more days in case my order got on a later flight instead. So, fast forward to the 9th when my order should’ve already been dispatched to the National Mail Center (Pusat Mel Nasional), processed to be sent to the closest national mail courier branches within the next two days and then, delivered to me the next day (12th). All of this totals up to 12 days, which is already four days more than the estimate Book Depository gave (5-8 business days for orders to arrive from the UK to Malaysia).

Unfortunately, by the 19th, none of my books had arrived. There had been two public holidays for Raya (15th and 16th), so it was possible that my books would be delivered to me later/got held up for sorting at the delivery branches. Thus, on two different days, I went off to the closest branch to ask if they had it…which led me to an issue that others may potentially face:

The staff will most likely not help you look for your parcel.

It matters not that you can provide them with your mailing details, etc. etc. because a) they have a lot of parcels and packages and whatnot, and b) there is no tracking number so your items may not even be at their branch in the first place. Going through everything that’s in their warehouse can take forever and they have other matters to attend to as well. Don’t easily believe them if they ask for your contact number, saying that they’ll call you once they’ve found it too because they certainly haven’t contacted me at any time or any point since then.

shika sighs

So, left with no other choice, I emailed Book Depository, asking them what my options were in case my order was truly and really lost. They were prompt and great, but a refund is not among the options (though, I’ve read somewhere that they used to provide those?). I was a little uncertain about being sent replacements since they could go missing as well, but ultimately accepted the offer. I mean, one of them might actually reach my doorstep and my money wouldn’t be completely burned…hopefully.

Now, that it’s the 5th of July, I’ve received my original order and one replacement.

IMG_20180705_183339
My previous order (Arden Shakespeare books) came together while these came separately, so I guess whether an order comes altogether or separately depends on  publisher/seller.

The original order (assuming that original orders are delivered in the cardboard envelope/box packaging while replacements are sent in large letter waxed paper envelopes due to the difference in bookmarks I received) for Cinderella, Necromancer came on the 21st and I’ve never been so flustered because I actually confirmed my mailing address for replacements to be sent to the day before.

Though, I guess it’s fortunate that my replacement for it hasn’t arrived yet/has maybe gone missing instead since it’s also late. As for Mister Tender’s Girl, the replacement came on the 2nd of July in the aforementioned waxed paper envelope. Fortunately, it hadn’t rained and the postman was kind enough to leave it on top of my car instead of flinging it over my gates the way the previous one did. Though, that didn’t save my copy from lightly dented edges…

Then, on the 3rd of July, funny enough, my original order for Mister Tender’s Girl came. And now, I have two of the same books because Book Depository is also insanely kind enough to let me keep them.

IMG_20180705_183208_079

And there you have it folks, my second experience with Book Depository! I still don’t fancy the lack of tracking number since it’s nerve-wracking not knowing where your order is. Being stuck in the limbo between waiting a little longer or immediately contacting Book Depository for replacements makes me anxious too. Plus, receiving both the original and the replacement copies is flustering… o(・´д・`o)))三(((o´・д`・)o

TL;DR

  1. Orders from Book Depository will be delivered by regular POS Malaysia (not Pos Laju).
  2. Orders may be delivered separately—probably depending on the publisher/seller because my previous order (Arden Shakespeare books) came together while my latest one came separately.
  3. Personally checking if your order is being held at a your closest POS Malaysia branches (the ones where you collect your mail, not the ones where you pay your bills, send mail, etc.) may not yield results.
  4. Orders can take 10 working days to more than a month (not including weekends and public holidays) to arrive at your doorstep. *See (5)
  5. Don’t be afraid of missing your delivery, if the weather isn’t bad when the postman arrives or there’s nothing physical that’s really hindering him/her, your delivery will be there. (Mine got flung over my house gates/left on top of my car parked in front of said gates).
  6. Contact Book Depository once you’re certain your order is missing, they will replace your books. (My advice is to do this 30 working days after your order is dispatched, just to be sure.)
  7. The books will either be delivered in a cardboard envelope/box, or a large letter waxed paper envelope with a layer of bubble wrap inside. (I assumed that original orders arrive in the cardboard packaging while replacements arrive in the waxed paper one due to the difference in bookmarks I got).
  8. If your original order arrives before/after/together with your replacement, let Book Depository know! Usually, they’ll let you keep both (I haven’t heard of an instance when they didn’t, tbh).

  1. I ordered a book (Cross her Heart by Sarah Pinborough) mid-May and it still hasn’t arrived. I already contacted them and they told me they’re waiting for their next batch of books, could be any day and they’ll be shipped out asap. Not very happy though that it’s taking such a ridiculous time to get it.

    1. Oh no! That’s so terrible and completely ridiculous 😱 They ordered my replacement books the moment I confirmed my mailing address with them, and even if they are waiting for a batch of books being shipped to them, they should be able to provide you an ETA at the very least…Will they notify you the moment they ship out the replacement? If not, the waiting game will be all the more worse 😫😫😫

  2. I’m having the same issue. POS didnt help at all. I will wait a month before emailing book depository. Doesnt help with all the May public holidays in KL:/ Thanks for the article- I have faith my things will eventually arrive:)

    1. Hi Lucy and thank YOU for reading my post 💜 I just ordered more books from Book Depository and they aren’t here too. We definitely have too many public holidays (Not that it’s bad, only inconvenient now and then 😂). Fingers crossed that our orders will arrive safely at our hands!

  3. I ordered It Ends With Us on 20th May, it hasn’t arrived until now. They immediately sent me a replacement when I reported the issue, which would also take ages to arrive. This is frustrating, really.

    1. I know how you feel! The nation’s Malaysian delivery service has been more awful recently (and I’m beginning to think that I need to have an addendum or a part 3 to this post). I placed an order for 2 books late May and they haven’t arrived either. Book Depository seriously needs to start providing tracking numbers (or refunds!) 😩

      1. Hi may I know whether you guys checked with the pos Malaysia or not? if yes what did you ask them since we don’t have local tracking numbers? I ordered mine on 29th March and and it shipped on 2nd April but I still haven’t receive it yet 😥

      2. Hi Afi! I did check with Pos Malaysia and they were unable to help me because there’s no tracking number (it’s too difficult for them to search just based on name and address and how the package roughly looks like because they have a looooot of mail).

My suggestion for you is to email Book Depository and ask for a replacement. Your order might have truly gotten lost/stolen 😥

  4. HI there,
Can I know how long exactly did you waited till you get the original or replacement? Coz I ordered on 28th October and dispatched on 30th and still haven’t received any. I also emailed to them regarding my concern.

    1. Hi Alya! My most recent order took about 1 month and 2 weeks to arrive (counting both working and non-working days). I was worried it got lost by the time 30 working days passed, so I sent them an email. The replacement came 20 working days after I got my original order. I hope your order reaches you soon!

  5. I am also having a really difficult time getting anywhere with Book Depository – I ordered a textbook for a course my son is taking and the package has been considered lost not once but twice. They are now sending out a third book. Ridiculous.

  6. Hey! Wanna ask, for all the orders you placed did you receive all the original orders? I ordered mine on 13th March and until now my order still has not arrived (It has been a month+ since) and this coronavirus situation isn’t helping at all :((( Thinking maybe I should wait it out or contact TBD. Thanks!

    1. Hi Jean! I did actually receive all the originals 😊 They just took longer to arrive than estimated (some slower than the replacements even!).

As for contacting Book Depository, I’d advise you to wait until the week after Labor Day. Most likely your order is delayed because of the covid19 situation and Pos Malaysia (along with other courier services) are also very overwhelmed right now due to the influx of online shoping in the country. Our fellow Muslim Malaysians have also started fasting so there will be delays due to that too.

If your address is in KL, deliveries to certain postcodes are halted because of Covid19. You can check the Book Depository website for which postcodes these are, and if yours is one of them, they’ve requested to be contacted so they can assist. Hope this helps you!

      1. Well that was fast 😀
I’ll definitely take your advice! This is like you said, being ‘stuck in limbo’, it’s quite frustrating really…..even after all these years they still couldn’t provide a tracking no. :(. Anyways, thanks for replying and have a great day!

      2. No problem! I just happened to be online when you commented 😊 And yes, it really is frustrating. Tracking numbers will be a huge help and a reduce in loss due to missing books, but well, not sure what goes on in the minds of the Book Depository Team 😅 I hope you’ll have a great day too, and that your books will arrive soon!

      3. Update for anyone interested: I received my order 4 months after dispatching (18th March-10th July). TBD managed to refund me after I contacted them two months ago. This super long delay may be caused by factors such as: pos office location/efficiency, lack of tracking no., covid 19, size of order etc. The point is if you’re patient enough your order will probably reach you…….just that it may take a while (to put it lightly). :/

  8. I ordered mine on 12 June, so this is the exact date of a month since the books were dispatched. Should I contact Book Depository regarding this matter?????

    Like

    1. Hi there! A month means 30/31 working days (not including weekends and public holidays) and with the covid19 situation + rise in online shopping, there will definitely be more delays on Malaysia’s side and the country of the shipper as well. It would be best to give it a few more weeks before you contact Book Depository, just to be sure. Hope this helps! 😊

  9. I ordered my first book Be Happy Always by Xandria Ooi at Book Depository last 8th of December 2020. I received an email on the same day from them about the confirmation of my order and the confirmation number but there’s no tracking number. They sent me again an email that my order is on it’s way already on the 14th of December 2020. I’m so excited and happy to have it and read it. But until now I haven’t receive my order and there’s is no update regarding my order since there’s no tracking number. It says that it will take 5-7 days only to reach in Canada. I don’t know what to do but to think that my parcel is missing and how and where to contact the Book Depository in ask for my order.

    Like

    1. Hi Geny, I’m not sure about Canada as I’m not from there, but I think it’s possible that your order is delayed since Christmas, Boxing Day and the New Year just passed (also Book Depository states that it’ll take 7-10 business days for orders to Canada, not 5-7 business days). If you’re certain it is missing, you can contact Book Depository through their contact us page: https://www.bookdepository.com/contactus
      Hope this helps 🙂

  10. Hi, I buy books from Book Depository from time to time, and recently I bought two D&D books that were QUITE expensive on Kinokuniya and were much better priced on Book Depository.
Unfortunately, I actually bought them in Nov 2020, and after waiting the allotted 20 working days, I still hadn’t received it, so I emailed them and they issued me a full refund early this month.
Then totally unexpectedly, I got the books today, which is 2 weeks after I got the refund…

The ethical thing would be for me to let them know, and ask them how I can pay for it.
The only thing holding me back is, how will they charge me for it? Can they just reverse the refund? God forbid, they wouldn’t end up telling me to send the books BACK, or charge me extra for it somehow, will they? Curious how others in this situations handled it.

    Like

    1. Hi! I’ve not gotten a refund from Book Depository before, but the right thing to do would be to let them know that you’ve received the books and offer to pay for them. I don’t think they would tell you to send the books back (since it might get lost during delivery + costs extra) or charge you extra. Most likely they’ll ask you to bank in the amount rightfully owed to their accounts so they can pay the publisher for the book. Hope this helps! 🙂

  11. I just bought a book from them when I realise that I bought the wrong one….will they give me a refund ? Because the order is still processing.

    1. Hi there! I’m not sure what happens when an order is cancelled as I’ve not done that before. But, you can always drop them an email and ask (better to do it ASAP before they dispatch the order) 🙂

  12. Hi. I wonder do they update on the website if the books are delivered? i put my office address so idk if i should ask the guard if they get the parcels or not

    Like

    1. Hi Ameera! Based on my experience, they only change the status on the website to “dispatched” once the publishers have sent out the books. They don’t update it again when your book is delivered cause there’s no tracking number for them/us to know if the books are actually delivered or not 😅

After two weeks from the date of your order, maybe you can check with the guard once a week to see if it arrived?

  13. thanks for your blog. I been buying from bookdepository a lot over the past one year. I have a question though, i ordered two books and the one that was supposed to be on the way on a later date arrived on my doorstep first and the one dispatched earlier is still nowhere to be seen. I have yet to reach 30 days yet but as you said, the nervousness is there all the time. Have you ever face a situation like that before? Other than that, thoroughly enjoyed ordering books from them as local book stores just don’t stock up on books I am looking for.

    Like

    1. Hi Vincent, thanks for reaching out! I have actually faced that kind of situation multiple times before. A lot of times, a later order arrives earlier because the publisher or book distributor who shipped it out is closer to your country. Ie: if they have a division in Australia, the book will definitely reach your address quicker than those that are only located in UK/USA. Hope this helps! 😊

  14. Hello, where did you put the delivery address for you them to deliver the book to you? Cause I put my house location but the problem is my house doesn’t have a Peti Surat, so will they still send it to my house?

    Like

    1. Hello! I’m not sure if not having a mailbox is a concern but if you’ve received parcels and letters before with no issues then it should be fine. The pos malaysia couriers will either call you when they reach or they won’t call you and just leave your parcel nearby (on your car, dropped inside your house gate, etc) 😅

      Like

      1. Thanks for replying 😊, I’m asking this because I’ve never use pos Malaysia couriers b4, I only ever buy stuff online from shopee which delivers it to either Abx sorting centre or poslaju office. This is my first time using book depository so I’m a little bit anxious about the delivery.

        Like

      2. No problem! I think it should be fine, cause thinking back, none of the couriers (DHL, Pos Malaysia, Pos Laju, J&T, Gdex, etc. I think I’ve used all except for Skynet) ever put my parcels in my mail box. They usually leave it on the tembok, on the car or just inside my house gates 😂 I hope your books will arrive safely!!

  15. Hi, I came across you blog when searching for issues with book dep. I used both opentrolley and book depository. Opentrolley gave me a tracking code to Indonesia. But the books that i want is cheaper in book dep. Thus I made 2 order from book dep recently. One, was 37 days ago dispatched, but has not arrived till now. Contacted the customer service week ago but no news. Just send an email to them, i hope they give me a solution.
in your case, do you need to send may email before being responded?

    Like

    1. Hello Mellen! Normally, they respond really quickly and I only send one email before I get a response the next night (timezones difference). If they’ve not replied to you yet, maybe try sending them a follow up email?

Btw, just to be sure, don’t add in weekends and public holidays (in Indonesia and in the country which your books is dispatched from) into your total number of days since book was dispatched. Book Depository only counts working days so it may have been less than 37 working days since your book was sent out 😅 Your book may have been shipped out via sea mail too (once, I waited three months for the book) which takes even longer than airmail.

      Hope this helps! 😊

  17. Hi Aria! I just read your article and honestly im relieved that im not the only one who is going through the same problem. I just wanna ask cos my book still hasnt arrived after 30 days and i am worried. Which courier service do i get into contact to? Will they eventually send my book? What do i do because literally dont like spending my money on nothing.

    Like

    1. Hi Suria! Thanks for reading my post 😊

The national courier service handles mail from Book Depository so they should deliver your book(s) to you eventually. Please keep in mind that weekends and public holidays shouldn’t be included in your count for how long it’s been since your order is on it’s way to you as many couriers don’t work during those days.

If you haven’t received your order by 60 working days, it’s safe to say your books may be missing. Do contact Book Depository to let them know and they will send replacements over to you.

      Hope this helps!

  18. Hii, I made an order on the 23rd of January and its currently 38 days/28 business days since I made the order an it still hasn’t arrived. I contacted bok depository as soon as the estimated delivery date passed and they told me that it should arrive by the 3rd of Mrach and if it hasn’t arrive by the 8th they will consider it lost in transit.
In your experience, were your required to pay for replacements? Because I bought 6 books and spent RM200+ and I’m super worried. Is there anything I can do?

    Like

    1. Hi there! Replacements from Book Depository are FOC for the buyer 😊 I recommend waiting until the latest ETA date they’ve given you (tbh, the best would be to wait for 2 whole months in overall) before asking them for replacements as more often than not, it is just our abang postmen being too busy to be able to sort out all the mail and parcels ASAP (with the rising Covid cases, they’re even more severely short-staffed now). So yeah, a little bit more patience and understanding would help all sides, especially since the publishers wont get reimbursed by Book Depository for the MIA/replacement books 😅 Hope this helps!

  19. Hi,i have placed orders in BD as well. As you mentioned,if the parcel is being lost/stolen,they will send replacement. Can i know was it easy for the replacement to be delivered as there’s no tracking number?

    Like

    1. Hi, the original parcel was delivered to me by my local courier. It’s just a matter of how many parcels you get in the end, and I ended up with both replacements and the original (the date of sending out parcels by the sender is on the shipment label).

      Like

      1. So at the end of the day all you need is patience 🥲. I’m worried that without tracking number both the original and replacement will be stolen/missing or even untrackable again. As you know the local postal might take long time to sort out this delivery thing. Money will go vain if that happens. Thank you so much for sharing your experience

        Like

      2. Yup, that’s sadly, the only option we have as Book Depository customers. If your original parcel doesn’t arrive after 30 working days, ask for a replacement. If the replacement doesn’t arrive after 30 working days, you can ask for another. It’s just an endless cycle of that and hoping at least one of them will reach your hands 😅

        Like

      3. Hi, i just got my second order from BD without delay. It was unexpected because after reading your blog i was mentally preparing to not expect the original books 😬 and the process of getting the replacement will be endless too. But surprisingly i got two of my original books much earlier than the estimation date given. Nevertheless, buying books from BD is still quite risky as it depends on luck but the pricing is reasonable and they have all titles which tempt us to buy more 😅. Thank you again for enlightening us which help us the buyers of BD to be prepared.
